Arizona Food Handler Card Requirements
What Arizona requires, what your county may require on top, and free practice tests to get you ready.
Do You Need a Food Handler Card in Arizona?
It depends on your county. Arizona has no statewide food handler card law, but the requirement is set locally and some counties do require one. Maricopa County, which covers the Phoenix metro area, requires food handlers to complete ANAB-accredited training within 30 days of starting work. Cards are typically valid for usually 3 years for an ANAB-accredited card. Because the rules are set county by county, the requirement that applies to you depends on where the restaurant is, not where you live.
Where This Applies in Arizona
Most Arizona food service work is concentrated around Phoenix, Tucson, Mesa and Scottsdale, and each falls under its own county or city health department. The state capital is Phoenix. The rule that binds you is the one for the address where you work, so two people doing the same job in different parts of Arizona can face different requirements.
Arizona’s food industry leans heavily on resort dining, quick service and a long winter tourist season, which matters for timing: seasonal and high-turnover operations tend to hire in bursts, and that is exactly when managers ask new staff to produce a certificate quickly.
How to Confirm Your Own Requirement
Ask your manager which health department inspects the establishment, then check that department’s rules directly rather than relying on a state-level summary. If you are applying for a job, ask during the interview whether a certificate is expected before your first shift — in high-turnover kitchens it often is, even where no law demands it.
Preparing for the Assessment
Wherever you sit it, the assessment draws on the FDA Food Code: 40 multiple-choice questions with a 75 percent pass mark, so 30 correct. Time and temperature control is the largest block and is almost entirely recall, which makes it the fastest place to gain marks. Our temperature practice test drills exactly that, and the full 40-question test matches the real format end to end.

Food Handler Rules in Nearby States
Requirements are set state by state, and a card issued in one state is not automatically valid in the next. If you work shifts across a border, or you are moving, check the state you will actually be working in.
